Hello - I'm new to the tribe.
My name is spelled with an E - it may be silent but it's significant - my name isn't complete without it and it bugs me that people leave it off.
As for "Annie", my mom put the kabash on that with my pediatrician when I was an infant - "her name is Anne, not Annie" - only one person calls me Annie and it's because he knows it drives me NUTS!
Anne is classic and graceful - I'm often told it's a beautiful name (and it is!!)

Re: What's in a Name?
Wed, August 11, 2004 - 11:13 PMoh my god...you sound just like me...my mom nipped 'Annie' in the bud...but now I actually think it's kind of sweet--though I am still never called Annie...you know what they say in Anne of Gren Gables--Anne with an E is more distinguished. -

Re: What's in a Name?
Thu, August 12, 2004 - 6:14 PMMost people call me Anne Marie, only those closest to me call me Anne. Annie rubs me wrong; bad childhood memories of people singing "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow" over and over to me I guess. -

Re: What's in a Name?
Tue, August 17, 2004 - 10:39 AMI can't seem to get away from Annie--why in America with free education are people so dense to not realize the 'e' is silent? What are they/have they learned in basic English courses?
Do you find that with such a difficult name to pronounce properly you are more careful to pronounce other people's names properly?
ugh-now, I have that song in my head. ergh.
I really like being called Annie Oakley, even if it's Annie, because Oakley carried a gun. :D -

Re: What's in a Name?
Tue, August 17, 2004 - 11:40 AMI feel the same way. Just yesterday I asked a co-worker if he prefers Sam or Samuel. I think that having people constantly spell my name wrong makes me more conscious of using the preferred name and spelling names correctly. It drives me nuts when I see people name their children common names but spell them completely different. Their kids are going to forever be correcting people.
Sorry - about the song - it's worse than nails on a chalkboard!
Being called Orphan Annie drove me up a wall. I can handle Annie Oakley - don't mess with her!! -

Re: What's in a Name?
Tue, August 17, 2004 - 12:54 PMI am obsessed with names! I always want to know how people ended up with their names. I also feel compelled to weigh in when people are naming their children (what a horrible trait!).
Personally, I think you can't go wrong with a Saint's name or a character from a Victorian novel: Anne, Mary, Catherine, Teresa, William, James, Frederick, John, Mark, Elizabeth, you get the idea . . . -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Re: What's in a Name?
Sat, August 21, 2004 - 7:38 PMI prefer names that you can shorten - Caroline (Carrie), William (Will) - what can you do with Anne other than Annie? -

Re: What's in a Name?
Mon, August 23, 2004 - 9:04 AMYeah, you have to elongate the name to get a nickname out of it.
As for names with the most potential for a nickname . . . I think Elizabeth is the winner.
Liz
Beth
Eliza
Betsy
Libby
Betty
Bette
Liza . . . -
